The term "Mod" comes from the word modernist. The subculture originated in London (from the beatnik lifestyle) of the 1950s. The major elements of a mod lifestyle are fashion and music. The mod scene developed in England when youths began to reject the typical British culture around them. The mod goals are to be sharp, hip, fashionable, neat and smart.
- Male mods adopted a smooth, sophisticated look that emphasized tailor-made Italian suits (sometimes white) with narrow lapels, mohair clothes, thin ties, button-down collar shirts, wool or cashmere sweaters.
- Female mods dressed androgynously, with short haircuts, men's trousers or shirts (sometimes their boyfriend's), flat shoes, and little makeup — often just pale foundation, brown eyeshadow, white or pale lipstick and false eyelashes.
